Hiking trails of Bergeggi and Spotorno

The listed paths have been obtained following research on various guides and hiking maps, as well as on brochures or leaflets published by Local Administrations, with the aim of providing a more complete picture of the itineraries in the area.

Among the many paths, those indicated by special hiking signs have been privileged, placed on the spot by the Provincial Administration, because they are considered more reliable.

As for other paths in the area, identified and signaled by meritorious local initiatives, only a few are mentioned, because they are generally not sufficiently monitored and therefore may present some difficulties, especially in their identification.

However, there is an obligation to warn that unfortunately, most of the paths are in a state of neglect, with deteriorated, discolored and not very evident signs.

Area of Bergeggi

1) Botanical path: Bergeggi - M. S. Elena - Gola (o Bassa) di S. Elena

Difference in altitude: about 300m

Development: from Via Luccoli (indicative panel) - Strada della Sgarogna - crossing with path from Porto Vado - Sughereta delle Natte - ruins Forte S. Elena (launches with paragliding) - slopes M. Rocchetto - M. S. Elena (remains Castellaro preromanico).

2) Botanical path: Bergeggi ( Torre d'Ere) - Gola di S. Elena

Development: Torre d'Ere - Municipal Road of Ere - Case Mei - Teciu - Gorge of S. Elena

3) Bergeggi - Rocca dei Corvi

4) The Marine Cave and 5) The Trein Cave Internal
To visit the two caves it is advisable to park the car in the open space near the former quarry where a restaurant is located.

The Marine Cave

It is located on the uphill stretch that from the Bergeggi straight goes up the promontory that ends at the Spotorno straight.

Almost at the apex of the promontory, near the Croce di Punta Prodiani, you go down a steep path, sometimes with steps, up to the mouth of the cave (signposts). Burials and artifacts dating back to the prehistoric period have been found in the cave. To visit the cavity it is necessary to ask for authorization from the Municipality or Proloco di Bergeggi. The Trein Cave Internal

Internal development about 500 m.

At the end of the straight stretch of Bergeggi, before the ascent of the promontory, on the upstream side of the Via Aurelia there is the entrance to the train tunnel (disused), and, about 350 m. inside this, the entrance to the Grotto (closed by a gate). The cave was accidentally discovered in 1870 by some workers who worked on the construction of the Savona-Ventimiglia railway line.

Since 1970, following the shift upstream of the railway line, the cavernous complex has become open to visitors.

As for the Marine Cave, for the visit it is necessary to request authorization from the Municipality or Proloco of Bergeggi who will also provide a competent guide.

7) Spotorno - Monte Mao (Via diretta)

Development: Spotorno Via Antica Romana - Belvedere (indicative pole) - ascent of the steep south-east slope - anticima q. 384 - Monte Mao.

8) Spotorno - M.Mao (via normale)
Markers: red X and yellow H (scarce) Travel time: 2h Difference in altitude: 440m

Development: Spotorno Via Antica Romana - Belvedere - leave the direct route to the left ("X rosso") and continue on the dirt road of Via Romana - Loc. Mianda - detour to the left marked "H giallo" and "X rosso" (not very evident) - dorsal deviation to the right until anticima q. 384 - Monte Mao.

9) Spotorno - Beixi - Colle del Trevo
